Finley’s Peanut Butter Delights

I don’t know what it is about peanut butter, but it sure makes most dogs go crazy! If you’ve ever given your dog a spoonful of the nutty treat, you’ve probably witnessed that tongue lick, lick, lick and stretch as far as you’ve ever seen it go. It’s actually quite entertaining to watch your pup enjoy this sticky, gooey, and flavorful mess of a treat. I know anytime I pull out the peanut butter jar to whip up a sandwich or snack topping for myself, my dogs can smell it from a mile away. And, the next thing I know, they’re at my feet staring up at me with those big eyes and rapidly licking their chops. Peanut butter is very versatile for dogs. This delightful treat can be stuffed into Kongs, mixed into puppy ice cream, or even act as a frosting on dog birthday cakes. Didn’t think peanut butter could get any better? Well, listen to this: you can even smear it on the bathtub wall to keep your dog occupied during the dreaded bathtime.

My border collie, Finley, is a huge PB fan. Then again, Finley likes any kind of food. He will eat just about anything you give him. That being said, these Peanut Butter Delights are his absolute favorite and he just goes bonkers over them! And, I think he’d be happy to share the recipe for his favorite treats for other doggies around the world to enjoy.

This recipe calls for flour, but if you want to make it grain-free, go ahead and use your favorite dog-safe grain-free flour (chickpea, coconut, etc). Honey can also be added more or less to taste. Personally, I find that 1 tsp. is a good middle-of-the-road amount. The mixture of honey and cinnamon baking in the oven makes your kitchen smell divine... which is another added bonus of making these treats!

Yields1 Serving

1 ¼ cups Whole wheat flour (or your favorite dog safe grain free flour)
 ½ tsp Cinnamon
¾ cup 100% Natural Creamy Peanut Butter (make sure it is xylitol free!)
1 tsp All natural local honey
½ cup Skim milk (or goat's milk)

1

Combine all wet ingredients in a large mixing bowl.

2

In a separate bowl combine dry ingredients.

3

Slowly add dry ingredients into the wet until well combined. Form it into dough and kneed for about 2 minutes.

4

If dough is dry add in a little milk (a tablespoon at a time). Let dough rest for about 10 minutes.

5

Roll dough out onto a greased cookies sheet (about 1/2" thick)

6

Then, with a knife or a pizza cutter, run through the dough and make little squares (1”x1” or 2”x2”), depending on the size of your dog. Or, you can use a cookie cutter for fun shapes!

7

Bake at 350 for about 20-45 mins, then shut off the heat and let cool in the oven overnight. Doing this will help to ensure they will be crunchy. If you’d like to make softer treats like I do, bake them for 20-25 mins, then immediately remove pan from oven and allow to cool before serving. Store treats in an airtight container and keep refrigerated.
